Putting Turf or Pitch & Hold: Which Golf Green Do You Need?

Two Systems, Two Purposes
Not every golf green is built the same way. Riviera Grass uses two construction systems, and choosing between them comes down to how you want to play and how much room you have.
Realistic Ball Roll: The Putting System
Our private putting greens use 16mm specialist putting turf infilled with approximately 7kg of silica sand per square metre. It is a finer, lighter construction tuned for true, consistent roll, and it holds up confidently on short approach shots and pitches. The roll can be fine-tuned after installation by adding or reducing silica sand. This is the system behind most villa greens.
Pitch & Hold: The Professional System
Pitch & Hold is designed for professional golf greens and large estates with room for long approach shots. It combines 35mm specialist golf turf with around 15kg of silica sand per square metre, built up almost to the height of the fibres before a precise finishing process lets the fibres naturally cover the surface. An energy absorption layer takes the ball's energy on impact, so the ball can pitch and hold on approach shots, including shots played from approximately 100 metres, while keeping a smooth putting roll.
How to Choose
If your garden is a villa, a compact estate or an office, the putting system is usually the right fit. If you have the space for long approach shots, as on a golf academy or a large estate, Pitch & Hold is the system to discuss. We will advise during your consultation. You can explore both in our technology sections, or see our private putting greens and professional golf greens.
Built for the Climate
Both systems are engineered for the Gulf, where the surface must keep playing true through the heat. Learn how in The Science of True Ball Roll in Extreme Climates.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between putting turf and Pitch & Hold?
- Putting turf is 16mm with about 7kg/m² of silica sand, tuned for true roll. Pitch & Hold is 35mm with about 15kg/m² and an energy absorption layer so the ball pitches and holds on long approach shots.
- Can a putting green handle short approach shots?
- Yes. The putting system holds up confidently on short approach shots and pitches too.
- Can the speed of the green be adjusted?
- Yes. Adding or reducing silica sand after installation adjusts the speed and feel of the putting system.
