Backyard Putting Green in the UAE: The Complete Guide

Why UAE Villas Are Adding Putting Greens

A synthetic putting green turns a garden into a place to play: no driving to the club, no booking, no waiting. In the UAE, where natural lawns struggle through the summer, it is also a surface that looks the same in August as it does in January. That combination is why a backyard putting green in the UAE has moved from novelty to a serious part of villa landscape design.

A well-built green is beautiful when you play and beautiful when you don't. It frames the architecture, gives guests something to do, and gives a keen golfer a real short-game area at home.

How Much Space Do You Need?

Less than most owners expect. Our Al Barari project is only 20 m², with three holes, set around a pergola and stepping stones. At the other end of the scale, a 200 m² garden in Arabian Ranches now hosts three separate putting greens. The right size is decided by the garden, not by a template.

If you are weighing options, start with how you want to use the space: casual putting after dinner, serious practice, or a feature that mostly needs to look superb. Our Showcase shows real layouts from compact to estate scale.

Designing the Green Around Your Garden

Every Riviera Grass private green is drawn around the property rather than fitted into it, with slopes, tiers, breaks and integrated chipping areas where they suit the space. Bunkers can be added for a true short-game challenge, as on our Yas Island green.

Because every contour is shaped by hand on site, the design can also evolve during installation. A JLT family green that began as a small, flat putting surface grew into an L-shaped, three-tier green with six holes as the owners watched it take shape.

The Right Surface for a Putting Green

Our private putting greens use 16mm specialist putting turf, infilled with approximately 7kg of silica sand per square metre. It is a finer, lighter construction tuned for true, consistent roll, and it holds up on short approach shots too. After installation the speed can be adjusted: adding or reducing silica sand changes how fast the green plays. You can read more in our guide to putting turf or Pitch & Hold.

Preparing the Ground Properly

The finish you see depends on the work you don't. On our Arabian Ranches project the natural lawn was removed and a ground mixing tiles, concrete and soil was levelled so that no seam or change in height shows on the greens, with a shock pad beneath every putting surface. That preparation is what makes a green play true.

Frequently asked questions

Can a putting green fit in a small villa garden?
Yes. Our Al Barari green is only 20 m² with three holes and transformed the whole garden around its pergola.
Can the speed of the green be changed after installation?
Yes. Adding or reducing silica sand adjusts the speed and feel of the green, so it can be tuned to your preference at any time.
Do I need to remove my existing lawn?
Usually the natural lawn is replaced. On our Al Barari project we replaced the lawn around the pergola with premium synthetic turf, and the interplay of turf types lifted the whole garden.
Can I visit a finished green before deciding?
Selected completed projects across the UAE and Europe can be visited by appointment, arranged case by case based on each homeowner's availability.
